Professional Learning
Ysgol Gyfun Heolddu is proud to be a learning organisation. We recognise that to realise the four purposes of the curriculum, we need to create and support continuous learning opportunities for all staff. All teaching staff at Heolddu are committed to professional development. We are a ‘coaching’ school, which means that our teachers work collaboratively throughout the academic year to refine their practice and provide the best possible learning experiences for our pupils.
We are pleased to be an EAS Professional Learning Lead School and a Cardiff Partnership ITE Lead School. This status places Heolddu at the forefront of professional learning provision for teachers, enabling us to collaborate more widely with the profession to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.
Every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better.

Professional Learning through Teaching WalkThrus
We have developed partnership links with Teaching WalkThrus, and have moved our school towards a coaching approach to enable teacher growth. We are delighted to offer opportunities to work with schools looking to consider their approaches to professional learning and how the WalkThrus PL resource pack might be used to its best potential as a lever for improving pupil outcomes.
We offer an on-site, two-day programme that can be taken up directly with the school or subsidised through the EAS. The programme is facilitated by experienced school leaders at Heolddu Comprehensive School and has been created in partnership with the WalkThrus team. It is recommended for schools seeking to implement a powerful and highly effective approach to professional learning.
